Chalcocite - Flambeau Mine, Ladysmith, Rusk County, Wisconsin, USA

Sale Price: $100.00 Original Price: $200.00

The Flambeau Mine near Ladysmith, Wisconsin, was discovered in 1968 and contained rich deposits of copper, gold, and silver. Initially proposed in the 1970s by Kennecott Minerals, the project was delayed for years due to local opposition and the passage of strict Wisconsin mining laws focused on environmental protection. The mine was revived in the late 1980s with a scaled-down open-pit plan, permitted in 1991 after extensive regulatory review and public debate. Mining operated from 1993 to 1997, producing about 1.9 million tons of ore that was shipped off-site for processing. Following closure, the site was backfilled, treated to prevent acid drainage, replanted, and restored as wildlife habitat and recreational land. It is considered a world class producer of chalcocite crystals to collectors, especially large iridescent crystals.

This examples of chalcocite from the Flambeau mine exhibits a mass of intergrown crystals, displaying somewhat amorphous and dissolute structure. Dull blue and gray overall, there are some hints of purple in nestled areas. This specime is accompanied by a Bud Erhle label.
