The Kaiwu Mine locality lies in Hezhang County of Guizhou Province, an area with a long history of mining lead, zinc, iron, and other metallic resources. Although the operation itself is not extensively documented in readily available historical sources, its importance to mineral collectors increased during the early 2010s when notable specimens entered the specimen market. Particularly distinctive material consists of siderite crystals associated with lustrous chalcopyrite, accompanied by minerals such as calcite, dolomite, pyrite, and tetrahedrite-group species. There is some uncertainty concerning the locality name, with Chinese geological information indicating that at least some of the material sold under the Kaiwu name may have originated from the nearby Caiyuanzi siderite deposit. For this reason, Kaiwu is best regarded as part of the broader mineral-producing area of Hezhang County, with its collector significance stemming primarily from the quality and character of its mineral specimens.
This specimen is a matrix of classic Kaiwu material; finds around 2010. Amazing iridescence is visible on the chalcopyrite, which displays large tetragonal crystals intergrown with classic siderite! Striking in every respect, and superb quality. A lone calcite crystal is present, as well as minor dolomite association. Displays excellent at 2 positions naturally.
