Crystal mining at the Huanuni Mine in Oruro, Bolivia, is principally a by-product of the district’s exceptionally productive tin industry rather than a separate gemstone-mining enterprise. Huanuni is regarded as one of the world’s richest cassiterite deposits, and the oxidation and leaching of sulfide ores produced thick zones of cassiterite-bearing breccia that have yielded well-formed, lustrous crystals. The mine is also mineralogically notable for an extensive suite of sulfides, sulfosalts, phosphates, carbonates, and secondary minerals, including cassiterite, stannite, franckeite, cylindrite, siderite, ludlamite, vivianite, and fluorite.
This specimen is a matrix of classic Bolivia. A nice sized blueish vivianite spray adorns a glittering matrix with rainbow iridescent pyrite and micro siderite crystals. Great aesthetics and form.
