The Morenci Mine in Arizona is one of the largest copper mines in North America, known not only for its immense copper output but also for producing exceptional mineral specimens. Over the decades, it has yielded fine examples of azurite, malachite, chrysocolla, and rarely dioptase or turquoise, often noted for their vivid colors and intricate crystal formations. Collectors particularly prize its well-formed azurite crystals and striking pseudomorphs of malachite after azurite. Although large-scale commercial mining dominates the site today, Morenci remains an important locality in mineralogy for its diverse and historically significant specimen production.
This specimen features a matrix coated in pale blue chrysocolla, accented by electric green micro crystals of dioptase! An excellent locale example, this comes from the N.A. Wintringham Collection, via Excalibur Mineral Company. An American classic!
