From the breccias and pods in the batholith north central Sonora Mexico come an instantly recognizable and classic find of tourmaline. Initially, these fibrous sprays were labels by collectors and dealers alike as schorl, when later testing showed all samples analyzed to be thoroughly dravite! The variance atomically between the two is minute, but proving yet again visual alone is sometimes not enough, especially with group minerals like tourmaline. These “velvet” like sprays were a notable find that first emerged around 2000, with the precise location unknown. The miner died in 2003 carrying the information with them.
Pictured here is a remarkably aesthetic example of “velvet” dravite sprays isolated on a bed of quartz crystals. Several sprays adorn the quartz coated matrix, giving great contrast and depth visually to the specimen. Undoubtedly this specimen has forgone professional prep, as iron staining is still evident; this present potential for some. Displays fantastic.
