Mining at the Santa Eulalia Mining District began in 1703 and has continued intermittently for more than three centuries, making it one of Mexico’s historically important silver and base-metal districts. The principal ores occur as carbonate-replacement bodies hosted by limestone and dolomite, with the district’s West and East Camps containing extensive lead-silver-zinc mineralization in mantos, chimneys, and skarn-related deposits. Over its long history, Santa Eulalia has produced more than half a billion troy ounces of silver along with several million tonnes of lead and zinc, establishing the district as a major contributor to Mexico’s mining industry. Mining has also exposed numerous oxidized cavities and mineralized openings that have yielded exceptional specimens, including selenite, fluorite, rhodochrosite, adamite, and other secondary minerals prized by collectors.
