Crystal mining at the Elmwood Mine near Carthage, Smith County, Tennessee, developed as a by-product of large-scale underground zinc mining rather than as a dedicated gemstone operation. Discovered in the late 1960s and brought into production in the 1970s, the mine’s Mississippi Valley-Type ore bodies contained open cavities and breccia zones lined with exceptionally well-formed crystals of calcite, fluorite, sphalerite, barite, and galena.
This specimen is a bed of lustrous sphalerite adorned with small calcites. A glittering example, harvested by the late Bud Erhle during his visit to the mine. Overall a classic piece of USA!
