Located just 18 miles south of Ennis, Montana sits the largest talc mine in the world; the Yellowstone Talc Mine. Currently operated by Margis Talc, the mine produces in excess of 250,000 tons of high purity talc annually. The deposit sits in the ultra mafic rock of the Madison range, and is not accessible to the general public.

This specimen is a simple, yet elegant example of a quartz cluster with light hematite coating. Beautiful and rare magnaese dendrites also are present. Colelcted on the high wall with permission by Mike Uphus years ago, this piece represents a rare sighting of crystals from a mine that otherwise is not well known for specimen production.
