First claimed in 1959 by Emil Chiline and George Richardson, Crystal Park has a long standing history of being one of Montana’s most known locations. In 1993, it would become a fee recreation site administered by the Forest Service. Smoky quartz, amethyst, scepters, and (rarely) Japan law twin quartz can be found. The site is a hydrothermal breccia in the granite of the Pioneer Mountain range, part of the Pioneer Batholith.
This crystal comes from the estate of Bud Erhle, in a flat labeled “1970s Crystal Park”. The crystal in question is a remarkably nice amethyst scepter form, with excellent color. Quality like this is uncommon from crystal park, especially in the modern era of collecting. There is a small ding on the tip, as most tend to have. The specimen is non permanently mounted to an acrylic base.
